Get your phone talking to your computer

iPhone

Plug it in and unlock it. When it asks "Trust This Computer?", tap Trust and enter your passcode. You only do this once per computer.

Android

Plug it in and unlock it. Swipe down, tap the "Charging this device via USB" notification, and choose File transfer. Some phones call it "Transferring files" or "File transfer / Android Auto".

Windows Win10 version 22H2 / Windows 11, 64-bit

Mac macOS 15 Sequoia or later.

Common fixes

iPhone on Windows: "Windows needs Apple's driver"

Windows can't talk to an iPhone without Apple's driver. Install Apple's free Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store (or iTunes), then unplug and replug the phone. You never have to open the Apple app. Still not showing up? Restart the computer once after installing the driver. On some computers the driver only starts working after a restart; after that it just works.

"Plug in your phone", but it is plugged in

iPhone: unlock it and look for the Trust prompt. Android: switch the USB mode to File transfer. Then give it a few seconds while the app reads your photo library.

"Apple's iPhone service isn't running"

Apple's driver is installed but its service stopped. Restart the computer, then plug the phone back in.

"Paused: the phone was disconnected"

The cable came out or the phone locked mid-copy. Plug it back in and it picks up exactly where it stopped. None of your backup progress is lost, and nothing is copied twice.

"Can't find" your folder

The folder you chose isn't reachable: an unplugged drive or an offline network drive. Reconnect it or choose another folder. The app won't start a backup into a missing folder on purpose, so it can never quietly copy your whole library somewhere new.

Some files didn't copy

Each file is retried three times during the backup. If a few still didn't make it, press Back Up again: they're usually temporary (a photo the phone was still saving). If the same files keep failing, report it from the app.

Can I move the backup folder?

Yes. Move the whole folder; the list of what's been backed up travels inside it. Point the app at the new location and it carries on from there.

License

What's free

The preview: plug in and see how many photos and videos are on your phone, and how much space they take. No account, no time limit.

What the license covers

Two phones, on any computer, Mac or Windows: the Windows app, and the direct Mac download when it arrives. A phone counts the first time you back it up. A third phone is a new purchase.

The app sees the phone's photos but won't copy them

The app says the phone isn't letting the computer read its photos, or Windows says "the device is unreachable". Older phones (USB 2.0, roughly pre-2019) do this on a USB-C to USB-C cable or a USB 3 port: the computer can list the photos but the copy never starts. Use a USB-A to USB-C cable, or a USB 2.0 port on the computer, and press Back Up again.

New computer? New phone?

A new computer needs nothing: plug the phone in, press Back Up, and it's recognized. A lost, stolen, broken or warranty-replaced phone is moved to its replacement by email: write to the support address in your order email, from the address you bought with.

Bought on the Mac App Store?

Apple licenses that copy, so there's no key to enter on your Mac. The Windows version is included: get your Windows license key.
